The Skyspanner Kratch in Borderlands 4 is one of the most frustrating encounters in the campaign. Found at the end of the Shadow of the Mountain mission, this oversized Kratch throws everything at you — limited ammo, poison-filled water hazards, swarms of mini-Kratches, and relentless knockback attacks.
While it isn’t the hardest boss in the game, the Skyspanner Kratch can easily become a nightmare if you’re unprepared. Here’s a complete guide on how to beat the Skyspanner Kratch in BL4.

Where to Find Skyspanner Kratch in Borderlands 4
You’ll encounter the Skyspanner Kratch at the conclusion of Shadow of the Mountain. Before you can access Defiant Calder’s office, the massive flying Kratch will swoop in and start the fight.
The arena has two main platforms:
- A small central platform with a dangerous hole.
- A larger platform straight ahead from the entrance.
Tip: The larger platform gives you more space to maneuver and makes dodging attacks easier.
Skyspanner Kratch’s Attacks in BL4
The fight is fairly straightforward, but every move the Skyspanner Kratch has is irritating to deal with. It has two health bars, though thankfully, the second phase doesn’t introduce new mechanics.
Here are its main attacks:
- Sonic Blast: Launches repeated shockwaves that knock you back, often pushing you toward the poisonous water below.
- Mini-Kratch Swarm: Spits out smaller Kratches that home in and explode on contact.
- Elemental Balloon Kratches: Releases Kratches tied to balloons that float toward you. Each one triggers a random elemental explosion when destroyed or when hitting the player.
Weakness: As a fleshy enemy, the Skyspanner Kratch is particularly vulnerable to Ignite damage.
Tips to Defeat Skyspanner Kratch in Borderlands 4
Here’s how to make the fight manageable:
1. Watch Out for Mini-Kratch Missiles
The most dangerous move is when the boss scrunches its tail and spits out explosive mini-Kratches. These act like guided missiles and deal huge damage.
Counter: Double jump and glide away to escape their line of fire.
2. Manage the Balloon Kratches
When it summons elemental balloon Kratches, you can either:
- Keep one or two alive to use as Second Wind triggers if you go down.
- Or, shoot them safely from the larger platform for controlled damage.
3. Stay Mobile and Use Platforms
The Sonic Blast doesn’t deal direct damage, but the knockback can throw you into poison water. Grapple to platforms when needed, and always keep moving between safe spots.
4. Exploit Weaknesses
If you’re playing as Vex, their Specters can continuously deal elemental damage from range, making this fight much easier. Ignite-based weapons are especially effective.
Caution: Sometimes, the boss dies and drops loot in the poisonous water. If this happens, retrieving rewards can be tricky.
The Skyspanner Kratch boss fight in Borderlands 4 is all about movement and patience. While its attacks are repetitive, the combination of poison hazards, flying minions, and constant knockback can overwhelm unprepared players. Stick to the larger platform, burn it down with Ignite damage, and use balloon Kratches strategically — and you’ll come out on top.
