Borderlands 4 introduces a brand-new Specialization tree designed for Vault Hunters looking to push their builds further in the endgame. Unlike the traditional skill trees tied to each character, the Specialization system is shared across all Vault Hunters — Vex, Rafa, Harlow, and Amon — offering everyone the same opportunities to expand their power.

In this guide, we’ll explain how the Specialization tree works in Borderlands 4, how to unlock it, and which nodes are best for different playstyles.
Spoiler Warning: This article contains light story spoilers about the end of the Borderlands 4 campaign.
How to Unlock the Specialization Tree in Borderlands 4
The Specialization tree unlocks after completing the main campaign. Once you defeat the final boss and speak with Lilith at Moxxi’s Bar, your endgame journey begins. This unlocks both Specializations and the Ultimate Vault Hunter difficulty.
From that point on, you’ll start earning Specialization Points. These points work much like XP — even after reaching the level cap of 50, you’ll continue to gain them by completing activities, missions, and combat encounters. A purple bar around your level indicates your progress toward the next Specialization Point.
How the Specialization Tree Works
The Specialization tree is located to the right of the Skills tab. It is structured into four main columns and three subcolumns, each offering unique passive upgrades.
Here’s the breakdown:
- Main Columns: Each main column features one primary passive node (requires 10 points to unlock) and three sub-nodes (costing 1 point each).
- Subcolumns: Found between two main columns. To unlock them, you need to spend 10 points in both adjacent main columns.
- Equip Slots: After investing enough points in the tree, you’ll unlock four special slots on the left side of the menu. These allow you to equip any four passive nodes, tailoring your build to your preferred playstyle.
Example: The Sharpshooter column contains one primary node and three sub-nodes. Between Sharpshooter and Runner, you’ll find the Daredevil subcolumn, which only becomes available if you’ve invested 10 points in both main columns.
Notably, our playthrough revealed no hard cap on how many Specialization Points you can invest — allowing for deep build experimentation.
Best Specialization Nodes in Borderlands 4
The nodes you should focus on depend heavily on your Vault Hunter and playstyle. Here’s a breakdown:
Best for Weapon Damage & Skill Builds
- Sharpshooter + Runner = Great synergy for boosting weapon DPS.
- Pairing with Daredevil further enhances skill and weapon damage.
- Recommended nodes:
- Now with Caffeine
- I Am a Gun
- Honed Mind

Best for Tank & Ordnance Builds
- Survivor, Brute, and Gadgeteer = Strong options for durability and explosive firepower.
- Recommended nodes:

The Borderlands 4 Specialization tree adds a new layer of depth to endgame progression. Whether you’re chasing maximum DPS or building an unbreakable tank, there are plenty of passive nodes to explore. The freedom to mix and match across columns makes it one of the most flexible systems in the series so far.
With no apparent limit on Specialization Points, Vault Hunters can keep experimenting until they find the perfect setup for their ultimate build.
