If you’ve been holding off on buying a new iPad, you might want to wait a little longer. According to a recent Bloomberg report, Apple is gearing up for a major refresh of its iPad mini, iPad Air, and MacBook Air lineup — and this time, the big upgrade is all about the display.
OLED Is Coming to More Apple Devices
Apple’s reportedly testing out new versions of its devices that feature OLED (organic light-emitting diode) screens. These displays are known for their vibrant colors, deep blacks, and sharper contrast, making everything from photos to Netflix binges look better than ever.
And here’s the exciting part — the iPad mini is likely to be the first to get this OLED treatment. Bloomberg’s tech insider Mark Gurman says we could see the first OLED iPad mini as early as next year. Pretty cool, right?
Why Apple Is Making the Switch
This move isn’t just about better visuals. Apple’s reportedly looking to modernize its hardware lineup and encourage more upgrades from users. Sure, Mac and iPad sales are expected to pick up this year, but they still haven’t quite reached the sky-high numbers we saw during the pandemic years of 2021 and 2022.
Upgrading to OLED could give Apple’s lineup the fresh appeal it needs — though it might come with a small catch.
Expect a Price Bump
Of course, premium tech comes at a premium price. Gurman says the new iPad mini (code-named J510) could cost around $100 more (roughly ₹8,800 extra) compared to the current model, all thanks to that pricier OLED panel. So yeah, better visuals might cost you a bit more — but for Apple fans, it might just be worth it.
What About the MacBook Air?
If you’re hoping for an OLED MacBook Air, you’ll have to be patient. According to Gurman, Apple’s first MacBook Air with an OLED screen probably won’t arrive before 2028. In the meantime, there’s some good news — we might see a new M5-powered MacBook Air hitting the shelves this spring, as reported by 9to5Mac.
Where Apple Stands with OLED Right Now
Apple isn’t new to OLED tech — far from it. The company already uses OLED displays in its iPhones, iPad Pro, and Apple Watch. The Vision Pro headset even uses a more advanced micro-OLED panel.
And if rumors are true, Apple could soon bring OLED screens to the MacBook Pro lineup as well — something 9to5Mac has been hinting at.
iPad Air Users, You’ll Have to Wait a Bit Longer
Bad news for iPad Air fans, though — no OLED upgrade just yet. According to MacRumors, the next iPad Air, expected this spring, will still stick with its current LCD display. The OLED upgrade for this model seems to be on Apple’s roadmap, but it’s unlikely to happen before 2027.
