Marvel’s Spider-Man 3: Rumors, Storylines, and the Risk of an Overcrowded Sequel

Marvel’s Spider-Man 3: Rumors, Storylines, and the Risk of an Overcrowded Sequel

The Marvel’s Spider-Man series from Insomniac Games has been one of the most beloved superhero game franchises in recent memory, but it’s also full of unresolved threads. After the busy and often chaotic events of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, many fans worry that a trilogy finale might not have enough room to wrap up every storyline meaningfully.

Now, according to a recent rumor shared by MP1st, Insomniac may be adding even more complexity to Marvel’s Spider-Man 3—including a possible appearance from Miguel O’Hara, aka Spider-Man 2099.

The Spider-Man 2099 Rumor

The rumor claims that Insomniac is trying to expand on the small Spider-Verse connection already teased in Spider-Man 2, particularly through the Spider-Bot collectible quest. Allegedly, this could open the door for Spider-Man 2099 to appear in Spider-Man 3.

While that sounds exciting, longtime fans argue that introducing another Spider-Person risks pushing the story into multiverse territory, something many feel has already been overused in superhero media.

Spider-Man 2099 had his golden era in games like Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions and Spider-Man: Edge of Time. In those titles, his futuristic setting and time-travel elements made sense. But dropping Miguel into Insomniac’s Spider-Man universe without proper focus could make him feel like a half-baked cameo rather than the strong lead he deserves.

The Multiverse Debate

If Spider-Man 2099 does show up, the question is: will it be time travel or multiverse?

  • A time-travel approach would feel more grounded and in line with Spider-Man 2099’s roots.
  • A multiverse approach risks feeling forced, especially since Marvel films and comics have leaned heavily on multiversal plots in recent years.

Insomniac has mostly succeeded by keeping the Spider-Man games personal, character-driven, and grounded in New York City, even with the symbiote invasion in Spider-Man 2. Many fans hope Spider-Man 3 continues that grounded narrative style.

Too Many Characters, Too Little Time?

Even without Spider-Man 2099, Marvel’s Spider-Man 3 is already packed. The game is expected to feature at least three playable Spider-heroes:

  • Peter Parker – adjusting to life with MJ and the Anti-Venom symbiote.
  • Miles Morales – preparing for university while mentoring Cindy.
  • Cindy Moon (Silk) – teased in Spider-Man 2’s post-credit scene, almost certain to be playable.

On top of that, Mary Jane could return in her investigative role, and Hailey Cooper may reappear as well. That’s a lot of characters for one game to balance.

Unresolved Plotlines Waiting in Spider-Man 3

The next game also has to tie up numerous subplots left dangling after Spider-Man 2:

  • Norman Osborn’s transformation into Green Goblin.
  • Harry Osborn’s deteriorating health and possible villain arc.
  • Carnage teased in a side mission.
  • Chameleon and his secret agenda.
  • Wraith (Yuri Watanabe) and her unfinished story.
  • Dr. Octavius still scheming from prison.
  • The looming threat of Knull and other symbiotes.

That’s more than enough material for a standalone game without tossing Miguel into the mix.

Final Thoughts

While the idea of Spider-Man 2099 showing up is tempting, Insomniac risks creating a bloated, unfocused story if they add yet another Spider-Person into the already crowded mix.

If Marvel’s Spider-Man 3 is indeed the final chapter before Insomniac shifts its focus to the upcoming X-Men game, many fans hope it sticks to its character-driven roots and delivers a satisfying, coherent conclusion.
