After finishing A Lot to Process in Borderlands 4, you’ll unlock two new missions — one of them is Shadow of the Mountain. This quest takes you into Terminus Range, a massive mountain zone filled with caves, Kratches, and powerful Order forces. It’s also the point where difficulty spikes in BL4, with tougher enemies, more Badasses, and higher-level side content.

Mission Information
- Quest Giver: Zandra
- Location: Zandra’s Base
- Recommended Level: 15–20 (though many enemies will be higher)
- Estimated Length: 45 minutes to 1.5 hours
Objectives
- Reach Terminus Range & Belton’s Bore, defeat Order forces
- Speak with Auger leaders, find Defiant Calder
- Hack force fields, enter Clavehome
- Collect and place Signal Beacons
- Cross Dig Chamber and defeat Skyspanner Kratch
- Hack Calder’s office door and retrieve the relic
- Return to Belton’s Bore and place the Eridian Relic
Step 1: Entering Terminus Range
You can begin Shadow of the Mountain right after completing A Lot to Process. To get there, fast travel to Deep Seven (if unlocked) to save time, otherwise prepare for a long drive.
Before you reach Terminus Range, you’ll need to clear Checkpoint Vermillion, which is crawling with Synths and Order forces. Once cleared, continue toward Belton’s Bore, where Order soldiers are assaulting the Augers. Defeat them and speak to the Auger leaders to proceed.
Step 2: Finding Defiant Calder
The Augers will suggest tracking down Defiant Calder. Follow your quest marker, fighting through another Safe Haven filled with Badasses and Bulkheads. Along the way, you’ll also encounter The Great Work Crawler, which is tied to side content.
Eventually, you’ll rescue Calder and defeat more Order forces. The fight here is fairly straightforward compared to previous encounters.
Step 3: Following Calder & Hacking the Force Field
After saving Calder, follow him as he leads you deeper into the mountains. Use your ECHO Device to hack the nearby force field and gain access to Clavehome. Expect to repeat this mechanic throughout the mission.
Step 4: Entering Clavehome & Collecting Signal Beacons
Inside Clavehome, you’ll need to recover Signal Beacons located in the Lambent Mines. The area is packed with Synths, Badasses, and elemental Bulkheads. Take your time clearing enemies before advancing.
Once secured, use your ECHO Device to locate and collect the beacons.
Step 5–6: Placing & Hacking Beacons
To progress, place and hack multiple Signal Beacons throughout Clavehome. Some require grappling to higher platforms. Each time you activate them, more enemies will spawn — including Kratches.
Clear the area, hack both beacons, and push forward. Along the way, you’ll hear taunts from Vile Lictor, an Order commander.
Step 7: Crossing the Dig Chamber
The Signal Beacons will grant access to the Dig Chamber, a blood-soaked cavern filled with Kratches. Defeat waves of enemies, including a Badass Kratch, before moving forward.
Step 8–9: The Skyspanner Kratch Boss Fight
The highlight of Shadow of the Mountain is the fight against Skyspanner Kratch, a massive bug-like monster.
Tips to Beat Skyspanner Kratch in BL4:
- Keep moving: Use the larger outer platforms for more space.
- Balloon mechanic: When it summons Balloons, destroy them near the boss to inflict elemental damage.
- Avoid Sonic Blasts: They won’t deal much damage, but they can knock you into the acid pool.
- Beware the swarm: Mini-bats launched by Skyspanner can shred your health bar, so stay mobile.
- Second Wind option: The Balloons can be used to recover if you go down.
Once defeated, loot the chest and continue.
Step 10: Hacking Calder’s Office
After the boss fight, head to Calder’s office. Use ECHO-4 to hack the terminal above the door, then claim the Eridian Relic.
Step 11: Returning to Belton’s Bore
Finally, make the long drive back to Belton’s Bore. Follow Calder, place the Eridian Relic, and complete the quest. Your rewards include:
- XP
- Cash
- Eridium
- Rare/Epic Pistol
- Solar Flair Weapon Skin
