Where to Start Savage Salvage in Borderlands 4
You can find the quest in the Howl region, close to the Wreck of the Maestar point of interest on the top-right side of the map. The location sits on the highway leading toward Carcadia Burn.
The side quest unlocks after you finish Down and Outbound, so it becomes available quite early in the campaign.

Step 1: Following the Signal
Head northwest from the quest pickup location and track the mysterious SOS signal. You’ll run into a group of Rippers — take them out and locate the antenna on top of the nearby hill.
Once your ECHO-4 scanner pinpoints the new frequency, a Ripper vehicle will drill a hole into the ground. Jump into it to continue.
Step 2: Entering the Ripper Tunnels
Inside the tunnels, you’ll find the Ripper base. Look for a metal sheet that you can pull open using your grapple. This reveals a small passage leading toward the source of the distress signal.
The next area is packed with enemies, so prepare for a fight before progressing.
Step 3: Freeing Derek, the Survivor
After clearing the enemies, use your grapple to open a hatch and free the trapped survivor, Derek. He promises to lead you to the loot stashed inside the crashed ship’s cargo.
Escort him out of the Ripper base, but be ready for multiple enemy waves determined to capture him.
Step 4: Escaping with the Ripper Drill
At the exit, you’ll need to use a Ripper drill to escape. Unfortunately, it’s out of fuel. Interact with the console nearby to start the refueling process and hold off waves of enemies while it powers up.
Once fueled, the drill will dig its way back toward the crash site.
Step 5: Saving Derek Again
When you emerge from the tunnels, you’ll see Derek dangling from a ledge. Help him up and defend him from a fresh group of Rippers as he unlocks the cargo container.
Step 6: Defeating the Ravenous Thresher
Instead of treasure, the container reveals a Ravenous Thresher boss. Defeat it to secure a red loot chest, which can contain various weapons and gear.
Completing this fight ends the Savage Salvage quest in Borderlands 4.
